Record High Number of Data Breaches Reported
In a shocking revelation, the Identity Theft Resource Center’s 2023 Data Breach Report has indicated a staggering increase in the number of publicly reported data breaches in the United States. The report states that there were 3,205 reported data compromises last year, which marks a 78 percent surge from the previous year and a 72 percent rise from the previous all-time high in 2021. This alarming trend highlights the pressing need for stronger measures to protect personal information and respond effectively in the face of data breaches.
One significant factor contributing to this surge is the rise of supply-chain attacks. Criminals are now exploiting third-party vendors with weaker security systems to gain access to larger organizations and sensitive information associated with them. The report reveals that the number of organizations affected by such attacks has skyrocketed from 101 in 2018 to over 2,700 in 2023. This highlights the urgent need for better security protocols and heightened vigilance when it comes to third-party partnerships.
Looking ahead to 2024, the Identity Theft Resource Center anticipates that the unprecedented number of breaches in 2023 will lead to a surge in identity crimes, particularly impersonation scams and synthetic identity fraud. Criminals are increasingly creating fake identities by combining real personal information, such as Social Security numbers, with fabricated ones like made-up names or birth dates. Additionally, generative artificial intelligence is expected to contribute to more sophisticated phishing attacks and scams that exploit personal information obtained through data breaches.
To combat these growing threats, the ITRC emphasizes the need for more uniform laws and regulations governing data breach reporting by attacked organizations. This will ensure that breaches are promptly and transparently disclosed, enabling affected individuals to take necessary precautions. The ITRC also recommends the expanded use of facial identity verification as a means to combat identity crimes involving stolen personal information. For instance, banks could require customers applying for accounts online to submit a photograph of themselves to compare it against the photo on their driver’s license.
While individuals may have limited control over the security measures employed by organizations, there are steps that can be taken to protect oneself from fraud targeting them directly. One such measure is to stay vigilant against phishing schemes, where scammers incorporate real information about the individual to create emails or text messages that appear to be from legitimate institutions. Individuals should exercise caution when faced with unexpected messages claiming issues with their accounts or payment information, especially those that urge them to click on links or download attachments. Urgency conveyed in such messages should be viewed as a red flag.
Additionally, individuals should ensure that software updates containing security patches are promptly installed on their devices. Utilizing multifactor authentication whenever possible adds an extra layer of security when accessing accounts online.
