Attempted Arson at Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthplace in Atlanta

Atlanta police have arrested a 26-year-old woman who allegedly tried to burn down the birthplace of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in Atlanta. The incident took place at the two-story home located in the historic Auburn Avenue Historic District. Quick action from individuals at the site prevented any damage to the property.

Arrest and Investigation

The suspect was apprehended by officers around 5:45 p.m. on Thursday after a report of vandalism in progress. According to the police statement, preliminary investigations revealed that the woman had poured gasoline on the porch and door of the home. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum commended the quick action of those present, stating that their intervention saved an important historical landmark.

Eye-Witness Account

A witness captured video footage of the incident, which showed the woman dressed in black pouring a liquid from a large red gas canister onto the front porch of the house. The witness also noted that she was not wearing any shoes. Two men from Utah, who were visiting Atlanta for work, noticed the suspicious activity and approached the woman. They realized she was pouring gasoline and pleaded with her to stop. When she attempted to ignite the property and bushes, they had to physically restrain her until police arrived.

Legal Charges and Response

The woman has been charged with second-degree attempted arson and interference with government property. She has been taken to a hospital for a psychological evaluation. The birth home of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is now a museum owned and operated by the National Park Service. The King Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of King and his wife Coretta Scott King, issued a statement expressing gratitude to the individuals who intervened and the law enforcement’s swift response.

“Tonight, an unfortunate incident occurred at the birth home of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as an individual attempted to set fire to this historic property,” the statement read. “Fortunately, the attempt was unsuccessful, thanks to the brave intervention of good samaritans and the quick response of law enforcement.”

The King Center also extended their prayers to the individual who allegedly committed the act, emphasizing their commitment to nonviolence and understanding.
