Water Main Break in Brockton Causes Road Closure and Water Shutdown

BROCKTON, MASS. (WHDH) – An overnight water main break in Brockton has caused significant disruptions, with water flowing down Montello Street and part of Route 28 being closed for repairs.

Old Pipe Breaks, Affects Hundreds of Residents

The Brockton Department of Public Works reported that the water main break occurred around 1 a.m. on Wednesday. The pipe involved in the incident is believed to be approximately 100 years old, highlighting the need for infrastructure upgrades.

As a result of the break, water access for hundreds of residents has been shut down. The DPW crews have been working diligently to repair the damage, tearing up asphalt and cleaning up the affected roadway throughout the morning.

Commissioner of Brockton Public Works, Patrick Hill, stated, “Right now, we probably have about 200 or 300 customers impacted, about a mile of pipe is shut off – but it’s only the pipe on the main road, it’s not any of the side streets.”

Route 28 Closure and Estimated Repair Timeline

In order to facilitate the repair work, a portion of Route 28, specifically from Lawrence Street to Allen Street, has been closed. This closure is expected to remain in effect until the repairs are completed.

Officials estimate that the repair work will likely continue throughout the morning and into the afternoon. The Brockton DPW has stated that water service may be restored for affected residents by 4 or 5 p.m.

Residents are advised to stay updated on the situation and follow any instructions or updates provided by the authorities.
