Police Chase Ends with Arrest of Three Individuals, Including Two Minors

HOUSTON, Texas – Over the weekend, a police chase involving a stolen vehicle came to a close with the arrest of three individuals, including two 17-year-olds. The accused reckless driver, Oscar Calles, a high school student, evaded law enforcement and drove the wrong way on a busy road. Daniel Luna and Sarai Garcia, who were also in the vehicle, threw metal tools out the window and fled the scene with stolen property.

Multiple Charges and Court Proceedings

All three suspects are facing multiple charges, including engaging in organized crime. Calles and Garcia are currently in jail, while Luna has already made bond. The trio is accused of nearly causing multiple crashes while driving the wrong way on the Gulf Freeway feeder road.

Viewer Captures Dashcam Video of the Incident

A dashcam video captured by an ABC13 viewer shows the alarming moment when a pickup truck was heading straight towards them on Saturday. Houston Police Department (HPD) officers were heard over the radio advising that the suspects were still going southbound in the northbound lane. The same video also captured three HPD units speeding into oncoming traffic behind the truck.

League City Police Department Policy

The League City Police Department confirmed that it is against their policy to drive the wrong way on a road, so they decided to back off while HPD officers continued the pursuit. Mark Stephens, a retired HPD officer with extensive experience in chases, emphasized the importance of stopping dangerous individuals before they harm others.

HPD’s Chase Policy

According to HPD’s policy, officers are not allowed to chase a vehicle if it is going the wrong way on the freeway. However, it does not specify whether this includes feeder roads. During probable cause court, the suspects were reprimanded for driving the wrong way on a major road and nearly causing several head-on collisions.
