Debris Falls onto MBTA Riders After Car Crash at Alewife MBTA Station

Surveillance video shared with 7NEWS Friday shows debris falling onto MBTA riders immediately after a car crash that sent a concrete slab onto the roof of the Alewife MBTA station back in February. The incident occurred on the top floor of the Alewife parking garage, leaving a car teetering over the edge of the garage.

Debris Endangers Commuters

In new video footage, glass and other debris can be seen falling toward several people, including a 14-year-old girl who suffered a fractured finger as a result of the incident. The crash not only caused injuries but also disrupted MBTA service for several days. Shuttle buses were deployed between Alewife and Davis stations while crews cleaned up the Alewife lobby, assessed the damage, and removed debris.

Alewife Parking Garage Closure and Reopening

The Alewife parking garage was closed from the day of the crash until February 7th, before partially reopening on February 8th. Rail service to and from Alewife resumed on February 9th.

No Serious Injuries or Loss of Life

Fortunately, there were no serious injuries or loss of life resulting from this crash. However, T officials estimated that the damage to the Alewife facility exceeded $1 million.

Driver Charged and Mental Health Treatment

The driver involved in the crash was initially charged with intentionally crashing his car into a barrier at the top of the Alewife garage. Charges included operating to endanger and eight counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. However, prosecutors later determined that this was not a criminal matter and agreed to dismiss the case if the defendant completed mental health treatment.
