Vice President Kamala Harris Addresses Teachers and School Staff in Houston, Texas

Vice President Kamala Harris made her first trip to Texas since President Joe Biden announced he would not seek reelection and endorsed her. Her surprise visit to Houston was met with a warm welcome from Mayor John Whitmire and other city and county officials. This marked her second stop in Texas this month, following a keynote in Dallas.

During her visit, Harris focused on Hurricane Beryl’s recovery efforts, visiting Houston’s Office of Emergency Management and meeting with police and other emergency responders. The response to the storm has been a point of contention between state, federal, and local officials. Texas Governor Greg Abbott was out of the country when the storm hit, and there was confusion over who was in charge. Mayor Whitmire thanked Harris for her partnership and encouragement but clarified that he has not officially endorsed her since she has not received the nomination.

The highlight of Harris’ visit was her speech at the American Federation of Teachers’ convention, held at the George R. Brown Convention Center. She expressed gratitude to the teachers and school staff for their service and support, acknowledging them as the backbone of the education system. The AFT, the nation’s largest teacher’s union, endorsed Harris soon after Biden’s announcement.

Harris also paid tribute to her former teacher, Mrs. Wilson, emphasizing the impact educators have on shaping the lives of their students. AFT President Randi Weingarten praised Harris as a strong candidate for president, highlighting the need to stand together for democracy, human rights, and economic rights for working people.

The convention provided a platform for teachers to address their concerns about the state’s takeover of Houston ISD and its impact on their ability to advocate for their students. Former HISD teacher Miria Benzo expressed frustration with the lack of autonomy and professionalism within the district. The teachers at the convention saw Harris as an advocate for unions and public schools, earning their support and potentially resonating with other Houston voters.

Many teachers and attendees at the convention were excited about Harris’ representation of diverse cultures and demographics. They saw her as a fresh and new voice that would invigorate people of color, women, immigrants, and various Asian communities.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to Houston showcased her commitment to education and her appeal to teachers and union supporters. While addressing the convention, she highlighted the importance of teachers’ work and expressed gratitude for their support. Her visit also shed light on the challenges faced by Houston teachers and the hopes they have for a leader who will prioritize their concerns.
