Residents at the Falls of Birchbrook apartments in Houston, Texas, have been facing a major inconvenience as the United States Postal Service (USPS) has stopped delivering mail to their mailboxes. The reason behind this disruption is the lack of proper security measures for the mailboxes in the apartment complex. Eyewitness News crews observed mailbox doors that were bent out of shape, locks missing from boxes, and even a missing mailroom door. Understandably, tenants are frustrated and upset as they have gone over a month without receiving their mail.

Rita Robledo, a tenant at the apartment complex, expressed her dissatisfaction with the situation, stating, “It’s not fair. It’s not fair at all.” She revealed that she has been charged late fees for bills she never received due to the interrupted mail service. Another tenant, Daniel Espinoza, shared his experience, mentioning that he noticed the absence of mail in early February. “I kept seeing no mail coming in. I’m like, ‘I should be getting bills,'” he said.

One issue that exacerbates the problem is the lack of communication from the management of the apartment complex. Tenants claimed that they were not informed about the disrupted mail service by the management. Espinoza expressed his disappointment, stating, “Our management here at our apartments are not sending out notices that we’re not receiving the mail because of what’s going on.”

The USPS has been actively engaging with the apartment complex regarding necessary repairs since mid-February. A letter provided by a tenant revealed that the postal service has been requesting information from the complex about repairs. However, no concrete timeline for repairs has been provided by the apartment complex management.

The absence of reliable mail delivery has prompted some residents to consider leaving the Falls of Birchbrook apartments. Robledo highlighted the frustration among tenants, saying, “That’s why people are leaving left and right.” It is essential for renters to have access to a working mailbox, and they have rights in such situations. Attorney Ernie Garcia emphasized the importance of notifying the landlord about mailbox issues in writing and allowing them at least a week to address the problem. If the landlord fails to take action, tenants can file a repair and remedy claim with a local justice court after providing two written notices. The court can then order the landlord to make the necessary repairs.

Currently, mail is being delivered to the leasing office, but tenants have expressed concerns about sorting through it themselves. This arrangement creates the risk of someone potentially taking another person’s mail, further adding to the insecurity surrounding mail delivery at the apartment complex.

The USPS discontinuing mail delivery to the Falls of Birchbrook apartments due to mailbox insecurity has caused significant inconvenience for residents. Late fees, missing bills, and the need for tenants to sort through mail themselves have become everyday frustrations. It is essential for the apartment complex management to address the mailbox security issues promptly and effectively to ensure that residents receive their mail securely and without any further disruptions.
