Stocks Show Little Movement as 2023 Comes to a Close

As the year 2023 draws to an end, stocks on Wall Street experienced wavering performance in muted trading. The S&P 500 saw a minimal increase of less than 0.1 percent on Thursday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 53 points, or 0.1 percent, and the Nasdaq, which is heavily influenced by technology stocks, fell slightly by less than 0.1 percent. Treasury yields also saw a slight increase.

Despite the mixed performance, markets have managed to hold on to slight gains for the week, with the S&P 500 hovering just below its all-time high set in January 2022. The benchmark index is on track for a ninth consecutive winning week and has seen a year-to-date increase of over 24 percent.

Thursday’s Market Figures

  • The S&P 500 rose by 1.77 points, or less than 0.1 percent, to reach 4,783.35.
  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 53.58 points, or 0.1 percent, closing at 37,710.10.
  • The Nasdaq composite fell by 4.04 points, or less than 0.1 percent, settling at 15,095.14.
  • The Russell 2000 index, which represents smaller companies, declined by 7.88 points, or 0.4 percent, to reach 2,058.34.

  • The S&P 500 has increased by 28.72 points, or 0.6 percent.
  • The Dow has gained 324.13 points, or 0.9 percent.
  • The Nasdaq has risen by 102.16 points, or 0.7 percent.
  • The Russell 2000 has seen a growth of 24.37 points, or 1.2 percent.

Year-to-Date Performance

For the year:

  • The S&P 500 has experienced an increase of 943.85 points, or 24.6 percent.
  • The Dow has grown by 4,562.85 points, or 13.8 percent.
  • The Nasdaq has surged by 4,628.65 points, or 44.2 percent.
  • The Russell 2000 has shown a rise of 297.09 points, or 16.9 percent.
