Wall Street Ends Holiday-Shortened Week with Modest Gains

Wall Street closed slightly higher as trading remained light during this holiday-shortened week. The S&P 500 inched up 0.1 percent on Wednesday, while the Dow and Nasdaq rose 0.3 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively. Despite the lack of significant movement, the markets have managed to hold on to modest gains for the week, with the S&P 500 coming off its eighth consecutive winning week.
Annual Gains Expected
With only two trading days left in the year, major indexes are on track to post substantial annual gains. The S&P 500 has seen an increase of over 24 percent for the year, while the Nasdaq, which is heavily weighted with technology companies, has surged by 44 percent.

On Wednesday:
- The S&P 500 rose 6.83 points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,781.58.
- The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 111.19 points, or 0.3 percent, to 37,656.52.
- The Nasdaq composite rose 24.60 points, or 0.2 percent, to 15,099.18.
- The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 7.02 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,066.21.
