Union Reaches Deal With 4 Hotel-Casinos, 3 Others Still Poised to Strike During Super Bowl Week

Union Reaches Tentative Agreement with Four Downtown Las Vegas Hotel-Casinos

LAS VEGAS—As Super Bowl week kicks off in Las Vegas, a union representing hospitality workers has reached a tentative agreement with four hotel-casinos in downtown Las Vegas. Meanwhile, employees at three other properties are poised to strike.

By Saturday morning, the Culinary Workers Union had announced a five-year contract agreement with Binion’s, Four Queens, Fremont, and Main Street, covering approximately 1,000 workers.

However, the Golden Nugget, Downtown Grand, and Virgin Las Vegas near the Strip have not reached an agreement with the union.

Late last year, the Las Vegas Strip’s three largest employers—MGM Resorts International, Caesar Entertainment, and Wynn Resorts—reached deals with the union, narrowly averting a historic strike that would have impacted 40,000 members.

With those agreements in place, the union turned its attention to securing similar contract terms for workers at other hotel-casinos in Las Vegas. Since early January, the union has successfully negotiated contracts with most of those properties, including Circus Circus, Sahara Las Vegas, the Strat, Circa Resort, and the El Cortez.

However, negotiations hit a snag with some remaining casinos. Last week, the union announced that it would go on strike if tentative contracts were not in place by 5 a.m. Monday for downtown casino workers at properties that hadn’t reached agreements.

The NFL’s 58th championship game is expected to bring approximately 330,000 people to Las Vegas this week, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

The Culinary Union, with about 60,000 members statewide, is the largest union in Nevada. It negotiates on behalf of its members for five-year contracts.
