Ukraine’s Counteroffensive Comes to an End Without US Aid, Citing Adjustments to Plans and Overwhelming Disadvantage
Ukraine is facing a dire shortage of artillery and ammunition in its ongoing war against Russia, with officials warning that the much-hyped counteroffensive is now dead. The lack of US military aid has left Ukraine at a significant disadvantage, as Russia’s military spending continues to set new records. The Kremlin now outnumbers Ukraine’s artillery strikes by approximately six to one, leaving the country in a vulnerable position.
The US has been embroiled in political games over military aid and has not sent any supplies to Ukraine in the past two months. President Joe Biden acknowledged the dire situation, stating that Ukraine is running out of ammunition and urgently needs more supplies from the United States to hold the line against Russia’s relentless attacks. The lack of support from the US has led to an alarming rate of civilian and troop casualties in Ukraine.
The strain on Ukraine’s artillery has forced the country’s troops to conserve ammunition, which has further hindered their ability to defend themselves and regain lost territory. Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister Mykhailo Federov revealed that the country has turned to its drone program to make the most of their limited supply of artillery shells. Drones are now being used to confirm targets’ positions before firing artillery, and unmanned aircraft are also being deployed to drop bombs or act as kamikaze drones.
Meanwhile, Russian forces have grown bolder in their attacks, taking advantage of Ukraine’s dwindling artillery supply. They have focused their efforts on eliminating US-made M777 howitzers, which cause significant damage to the enemy. This has given Russia an advantage in “air superiority,” as Ukraine struggles to defend itself without adequate ammunition.
While European allies have attempted to fill the gaps left by the US, their contributions are still not enough to help Ukraine beat back Russian forces. Denmark has announced it will contribute its entire supply of artillery, and the European Union has pledged to send Ukraine approximately 2,300 artillery shells per month. However, even if these promises are fulfilled, experts believe it will not be sufficient to turn the tide of the war in Ukraine’s favor.
The focus now for Ukraine is to hold the line of defense and prevent further Russian advances. While going on the offensive to liberate Russian-occupied regions is the preferred option, simply maintaining a strong defense will significantly increase Ukraine’s chances of ultimately winning the war. Continuous Western military support is crucial in helping Ukraine hold its ground and prevent Russia from further aggression, as allowing Ukraine to lose would give Russia time and space to prepare for a renewed war. This could potentially lead to a confrontation with NATO, requiring US troops to respond.
As the war in Ukraine enters its third year, it is clear that the country’s dire shortage of artillery and ammunition is putting it at a significant disadvantage against Russia. The lack of US military aid has left Ukraine vulnerable, while Russia’s military spending continues to increase. The situation is further exacerbated by political games and delays in providing basic munitions.
