Ukraine Commemorates Independence Day Amidst Ongoing War with Russia
Ukraine solemnly observed its 33rd Independence Day on Saturday, putting aside the usual festivities and instead honoring the thousands of civilians and soldiers who have lost their lives in the ongoing conflict with Russia. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a video posted on Telegram, expressed his gratitude to the nation and emphasized the importance of unity in the face of adversity.
The capital city of Kyiv saw people from all regions of the country gathering in their vibrant traditional attire, known as “vyshyvankas,” to participate in a symbolic parade. These embroidered shirts, adorned with various colors and patterns, represent the cultural diversity and resilience of the Ukrainian people. Many took the opportunity to capture the moment in front of the national flag and an “I Love Ukraine” sign placed near a makeshift memorial dedicated to fallen soldiers.
Ukraine declared its independence from the former Soviet Union on August 24, 1991. However, the country has been embroiled in a war with Russia since February 24, 2022. The conflict has taken a heavy toll, with more than 11,000 Ukrainian civilians losing their lives, according to the United Nations. President Zelenskyy, on the war’s second anniversary in February, had stated that 35,000 soldiers had been killed, indicating the devastating impact on both sides.
Oksana Stavnycha, a Ukrainian citizen who traveled to Kyiv with her family, expressed her appreciation for the sacrifices made by the soldiers, stating, “We can celebrate this holiday thanks to our soldiers – because of them we live.” She acknowledged the high price of independence, with men giving up their lives every day to protect their homeland.
President Zelenskyy delivered his address from the town of Sumy, near Russia’s Kursk region, which recently witnessed a surprising incursion by Ukrainian forces. This unexpected move has added a new dimension to the war, expanding the conflict into previously unaffected areas. Ukraine has successfully captured significant Russian territory during this offensive, including several small towns, and has detained numerous Russian soldiers. These actions aim to counter Russia’s advances in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.
Despite Ukraine’s military successes, there are still concerns about the safety of its citizens. The city of Pokrovsk, once home to 60,000 residents, is now facing encroaching Russian forces just 10 kilometers away. In response, Ukraine has started evacuating residents from the area to ensure their safety. On Friday, people clutching their belongings boarded trains to seek refuge in safer locations.
General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine’s top military commander, paid tribute to the brave soldiers who fought in the Kursk region by presenting them with military awards. He emphasized that Ukraine’s independence is deeply ingrained in the nation’s DNA, forged through the blood of heroes who fought for their homeland.
While Ukraine continues its offensive into Russia, it remains committed to protecting its people. Igor Kysil, a 52-year-old soldier from the 110th Brigade, who himself was wounded twice in the Pokrovsk area, expressed his dedication to the cause. Standing in Kyiv’s Independence Square with his wife, he affirmed, “This day is about our freedom.” Kysil, currently recovering from injuries, eagerly awaits his return to the front lines once his rehabilitation is complete.
The ongoing conflict serves as a reminder of the preciousness of life. Every minute is valued by those in Ukraine who understand the true cost of independence. Yuliia Fedenko, Kysil’s wife, eloquently summed it up by saying, “Every life is priceless. We value every minute of the time we have.”
As Ukraine marks another year of independence, its people stand united, determined to defend their sovereignty and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The resilience and courage displayed by the Ukrainian population during these challenging times serve as a testament to their unwavering spirit.
