UAW Files Unfair Labor Practice Charges Against Stellantis Over Dodge Durango Production

The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has filed federal unfair labor practice charges against Stellantis, accusing the automaker of violating contract terms and attempting to move production of the Dodge Durango out of the U.S. This move comes as the latest in a series of actions taken by the union against Stellantis, which has faced criticism from UAW leaders for production cuts and layoffs since the new contract was reached last year.

UAW President Shawn Fain highlighted the gains made in the 2023 contract, including the commitment to reopen an idled assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois, and build the Dodge Durango in Detroit. Fain emphasized that the UAW won the right to strike over these commitments and intends to enforce the contract. He stated, “Now, Stellantis wants to go back on the deal. As a united UAW, we intend to enforce our contract and make Stellantis keep the promise.”

Stellantis, however, has denied violating the commitments made in the 2023 UAW Collective Bargaining Agreement and strongly objected to the union’s accusations. The company has not yet responded to the latest charges filed by the UAW.

The UAW has also reported that several of its local chapters, representing thousands of members, have filed contract grievances against Stellantis over the alleged attempt to move Dodge Durango production out of the U.S., in violation of the UAW’s national agreement. The union has not provided specific details regarding when the attempted move occurred or the proposed location for Durango production. However, media reports suggest that Ontario, Canada, could be a potential destination.

In addition to the federal unfair labor practice charges, the UAW has multiple open grievances against Stellantis related to the company’s product and investment plans. These grievances are part of the union’s contract with the automaker.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has confirmed the UAW’s filing and will review the charges. The UAW’s actions against Stellantis reflect its determination to protect the rights and interests of its members and ensure that the company honors its contractual commitments.

This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by labor unions in the automotive industry and the importance of strong collective bargaining agreements. The UAW’s efforts to hold Stellantis accountable for its actions demonstrate the union’s commitment to fighting for fair treatment and job security for its members. As the NLRB reviews the charges, the outcome could have significant implications not only for the UAW and Stellantis but also for the broader labor movement and the future of manufacturing in the U.S.
