Shooter Opens Fire at Splash Pad in Detroit Suburb, Injuring Eight
In a shocking incident on Saturday, a shooter opened fire at a splash pad in Rochester Hills, Michigan, leaving eight people injured. Families had gathered at the popular recreational area to escape the summer heat when the incident occurred. Authorities initially reported that up to 10 people had gunshot wounds, but the number was later corrected after verification with area hospitals.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard described the shooting as random, with the shooter driving up to the park, walking to the splash pad, and firing multiple times. The suspect reportedly stopped to reload during the attack, firing as many as 28 shots. Authorities recovered a handgun and three empty magazines from the scene.
Law enforcement quickly cordoned off the area, and evidence markers were placed on the ground by investigators. Authorities urged people to steer clear of the active crime scene through a social media post. Thankfully, those taking shelter in the park were deemed safe to return home.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials are working to establish if there are any additional individuals or weapons inside the suspect’s residence. The conditions of the injured victims remain unknown at this time.
The prompt response from law enforcement was attributed to their use of a service that simultaneously alerts first responders to emergency calls. An officer arrived at the scene within two minutes of receiving the 911 call reporting the shooting.
Tragically, this incident comes just months after a similar act of violence in Oxford, Michigan, where a 15-year-old student fatally shot four high school students. The shooting has deeply affected the community, which was still grappling with the aftermath of that tragedy.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her heartbreak over the incident on the social platform X and assured the public that she was in contact with local officials.
