Tiger Global reduces investments in Magnificent Seven and increases focus on semiconductor makers

Tiger Global, a prominent New York hedge fund, has made significant changes to its investment portfolio, according to regulatory filings for the final quarter of 2023. The firm has reduced its positions in four out of the five Magnificent Seven tech stocks, which make up nearly half of its portfolio. However, it has increased its stake in e-commerce giant Amazon.com and shifted its focus towards semiconductor companies.

The Magnificent Seven tech stocks that Tiger Global reduced its positions in include Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Nvidia. These companies have been the top performers in the technology sector, but Tiger Global seems to be diversifying its investments. The only stock that saw an increase in the hedge fund’s position was Amazon.com, indicating its continued confidence in the e-commerce giant.

Tiger Global also made a significant move into the global microchip sector. It increased its holdings in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co by almost 48% and raised its stakes in Lam Research by 8.9%. These moves highlight the fund’s belief in the potential of the semiconductor industry and its commitment to capitalizing on this growing market.

In addition to semiconductor companies, Tiger Global made its first foray into the medical technology sector by purchasing shares in Dexcom. Dexcom specializes in glucose monitors for diabetes patients. At the same time, the hedge fund reduced its position in pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. This decision follows Tiger Global’s earlier moves to invest in Eli Lilly and its rival Novo Nordisk during the second quarter of 2023 when GLP-1 weight loss drugs generated significant enthusiasm.

The final quarter of 2023 also saw Tiger Global increase its holdings in DoorDash, a San Francisco-based food delivery company, and Fleetcor Technologies, an Atlanta-based payments processor. The fund’s positions in these two companies rose by 79.13% and 66.19%, respectively. On the other hand, Tiger Global reduced its holdings in Chinese e-commerce company Pinduoduo, ride-hailing giant Uber Technologies, and e-commerce powerhouse JD.com.

The decision to reduce positions in the Magnificent Seven tech stocks is not unique to Tiger Global. Many other top hedge funds have also been reducing their stakes in these companies, likely due to the increasing popularity of artificial intelligence and the desire to diversify their portfolios. However, it is worth noting that the Magnificent Seven still account for 46% of Tiger Global’s entire portfolio, with Meta and Microsoft alone representing a third of the fund’s holdings.

Overall, Tiger Global’s recent investment moves reflect a shift in focus towards semiconductor companies and other sectors like medical technology. By reducing its positions in some of the top-performing tech stocks and increasing investments in new areas, the hedge fund aims to take advantage of emerging opportunities and ride the wave of market trends in 2023.
