Bunny Saad, a former high school student who ran away with her boyfriend, described her descent into a life of prostitution and the abuse she endured.
The stories of these women reveal a common pattern – many of them enter the sex industry due to past trauma or difficult circumstances, and once involved, find it nearly impossible to escape. Lilly, a 13-year-old girl whose identity is protected, recounted her journey from foster care to being manipulated by a pimp. Stevie, also 15 years old and anonymized, shared how she was coerced into sex work and experienced drug addiction and sexually transmitted diseases as a result.
The Houston Police Department has implemented a unique policy to combat prostitution and human trafficking on Bissonnet Street. By closing off certain streets and preventing vehicles from driving through dark side streets, the police aim to disrupt the activities of both the workers and their clients. This strategy has shown some success in reducing the prevalence of prostitution in the area.
However, despite these efforts, prostitution continues to thrive in other parts of Houston. The Gulf Freeway near Hobby Airport and Airline Drive near Crosstimbers Street are just two examples of areas where sex work remains prevalent. Commander Reece Hardy of the Houston Police Department acknowledges the challenge of eradicating prostitution completely, as it has been ingrained in society for centuries.
