“The View Comedians Discuss New Netflix Documentary on Queer Stand-Up Comedy”

On a recent episode of The View, comedians Sandra Bernhard and Judy Gold joined the hosts to discuss their new Netflix documentary, Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution. The documentary takes a deep dive into the history of queer stand-up comedy, shedding light on the experiences and contributions of LGBTQ+ performers in the industry.

Both Bernhard and Gold have longstanding friendships with View co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar, creating a comfortable and open atmosphere during their conversation. The discussion even ventured into more intimate territory, allowing for a candid exchange of personal stories.

Bernhard began by promoting the film and emphasizing its purpose of showcasing the beauty and incredible talent of all performers, particularly those within the LGBTQ+ community. “We are the soul of entertainment,” she expressed passionately. Gold echoed this sentiment, adding that queer comedians often serve as truth tellers, using their unique perspectives to shed light on important issues.

The conversation then shifted to the comedians’ own experiences coming out of the closet. Gold shared a humorous anecdote about Behar prompting her to come out during a conversation at Catch A Rising Star. Behar had mentioned that someone had told her Gold was a lesbian, leading to her direct question about its authenticity. The View co-hosts chuckled at Behar’s straightforward nature.

Bernhard playfully interjected with a question for Behar, asking if she had ever been romantically involved with a woman. Behar laughed and replied, “No, but someday I will.” Bernhard teasingly responded, “You better hurry up, Joy!” The lighthearted banter showcased the camaraderie between the women.

Not wanting to be left out, Sara Haines shared her own experiences, mentioning that she had been to the well-known lesbian bar, the Cubby Hole. Gold jokingly remarked that she hadn’t seen Haines there. Behar playfully referred to Haines as a “closet lipstick lesbian,” eliciting laughter from the group. Haines then mentioned her involvement in a gay volleyball league during her time at Smith College, playfully proclaiming herself as “gay-adjacent.” Goldberg playfully acknowledged Haines’ remark before moving the conversation forward.

The View continues to provide a platform for meaningful discussions, including those centered around LGBTQ+ issues. By featuring Bernhard and Gold and their documentary, the show highlights the important contributions of queer comedians throughout history. The episode serves as a reminder of the power of comedy to challenge societal norms and bring marginalized voices to the forefront.

Catch The View on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC for more engaging conversations and diverse perspectives.
