The Upcoming Kia Carnival Minivan to Feature Hybrid Option while Keeping its SUV Design

The upcoming Kia Carnival minivan is set to feature a hybrid option, combining the popularity of SUV designs with the growing demand for hybrid vehicles. Kia Motors is tapping into the consumer demand for hybrid technology, as well as aiming to meet federal fuel economy standards.

Hybrid vehicles have become an attractive option for automakers as they strive to make their vehicles more efficient while avoiding costly fuel economy and emissions standards. They are also a more affordable and less drastic choice for consumers who want to transition towards greener options without committing to fully electric vehicles.

The Carnival hybrid model was announced at the Chicago Auto Show and is expected to be available for sale alongside an updated version of the traditional minivan in the summer. Both models will feature refreshed styling and interior technologies compared to the current model, which made waves in the family hauler segment with its SUV-inspired design when it was introduced in 2021.

Kia has not released pricing or fuel economy expectations for the new models. The current Carnival’s price range is approximately $33,000 to $47,000, with a 3.5-liter V6 engine achieving up to 20.6 miles per gallon combined city/highway and a total range of 418 miles. The hybrid model will offer a 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbo-hybrid engine producing 242 horsepower and 271 foot-pounds of torque. Kia anticipates that the hybrid model will make up half of the Carnival’s sales.

This will be Kia’s fourth hybrid offering, as the automaker already provides three plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The updated minivan not only includes a hybrid option but also boasts a redesigned front and back, featuring new lights and a larger grille. Inside, the vehicle offers Kia’s new infotainment system and other advanced technologies. The minivan continues to offer “VIP lounge seating” with power controls and leg extensions, reminiscent of a traditional reclining chair.

While the U.S. minivan segment has declined significantly since its peak in the mid-1990s, with roughly 1.5 million vehicles sold, some automakers like Hyundai and Chrysler still remain in this category. Kia’s parent company, Hyundai, achieved a 14% market share of the minivan market last year with sales of fewer than 44,000 Carnivals. Chrysler leads the segment with its Pacifica minivan, which includes a plug-in hybrid electric version and accounted for over 120,550 units sold, representing approximately 40% market share.

The addition of a hybrid option to the Kia Carnival minivan showcases the brand’s commitment to meeting consumer demands for greener technologies while maintaining the SUV-inspired design that has made the Carnival a standout in the family hauler segment. With its updated styling, advanced interior technologies, and the choice of a hybrid powertrain, the Carnival is poised to appeal to a wide range of consumers seeking both efficiency and style in their next minivan purchase.
