The Mets’ Controversial Chant: Keith Hernandez’s Concerns and Pete Alonso’s Support

Mets’ Chants Divide Fans as Color Commentator Keith Hernandez Expresses Disapproval

The New York Mets have been on a winning streak, but their rallying cries have sparked controversy among fans. During a recent game in Pittsburgh, SNY cameras captured Mets fans holding up signs that said “OMG” and chanting “Let’s Go Mets!” However, former MVP and current color commentator Keith Hernandez voiced his disapproval of a different variation of the slogan.

Hernandez expressed his dislike for the addition of an “F” in the chant. He shared negative experiences of fans asking him to sign autographs with “LFGM” instead of “LGM.” According to Hernandez, this was “very, very grotesque.”

Interestingly, Hernandez’s comments do not align with the sentiment of the Mets players themselves. All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso, in an article for The Players’ Tribune, praised “LFGM” and its associated meaning. Alonso emphasized that as representatives of the greatest city in the world, the New York Mets should be proud and say “LFGM” like they mean it.

This is not the first time Alonso has embraced the phrase. During his rookie year in August 2019, he tweeted a clip with “LFGM,” which resonated with Mets fans. He later used the four letters during a postgame interview.

Despite the controversy surrounding the chants, the Mets’ performance on the field has been impressive. The team has been propelled by two unexpected phenomena. The first occurred when McDonald’s character Grimace threw out the first pitch ahead of a game against the Miami Marlins, sparking a six-game winning streak known as the “Grimace Effect.” The second phenomenon was second baseman Jose Iglesias performing his song “OMG” after a victory over the Astros, turning it into a viral international tune that embodies the team’s great energy.

Unfortunately, Hernandez’s comments seemed to have had a negative impact on the Mets’ performance. They lost to the Pirates after allowing five runs in the sixth inning. However, with only 2 ½ games behind the final NL Wild Card spot, the Mets have a chance to bounce back in their upcoming series against the Washington Nationals.
