Why did Australia declare war on EMUs in 1932?
In the Campion District of Western Australia, farmers faced a crisis when 20,000 emus stormed their wheat fields, destroying livelihoods. Desperate, the government sent in soldiers armed with Lewis machine guns to wage war against the birds.
But what was meant to be a quick fix turned into a military embarrassment. The emus proved too fast, too agile, and too clever. Despite firing over 10,000 rounds, only a few hundred birds were killed. The rest? They simply outran the army.
This strange and comical event — now known as the Great Emu War — is a reminder of how unpredictable nature can be, and how human attempts to control it sometimes backfire spectacularly.
