The Dire Warning Issued by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Regarding CBDC Adoption

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent presidential candidate and prominent figure, has recently issued a warning about the adoption of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). Kennedy Jr. claims that CBDCs have the potential to pave the way for an authoritarian government similar to that of the Chinese communist regime. In a speech during a March 22 event, he expressed his concerns about the dangers CBDCs pose to individual freedoms.

Kennedy Jr. highlighted the Canadian trucker’s protests as an example of why CBDCs are dangerous for freedoms. According to him, the Canadian government portrayed the truckers as right-wing, fascist, and racist, which was an inaccurate representation. The government used facial recognition systems and other intrusive technologies to identify the participants, freezing their bank accounts as a consequence. This led to a scenario where the truckers couldn’t access essential resources such as diesel for their trucks, food for their families, or pay for their mortgages and education.

The truckers’ stories prompted Kennedy Jr. to emphasize the importance of transactional freedom in relation to freedom of speech. He argued that if individuals have the right to freedom of speech but are unable to exercise it due to government interference, such as freezing their assets, then freedom of speech becomes meaningless. According to Kennedy Jr., transactional freedom is “absolutely critical” for freedom of speech to exist.

To illustrate his point, Kennedy Jr. referred to China, where people use facial recognition systems to pay for everyday items like groceries and gasoline. The Chinese government maintains a social credit score on its citizens, imposing penalties and restrictions on anyone found violating regulations. These restrictions may include limiting an individual’s access to grocery stores within a certain radius of their home or workplace. In extreme cases, individuals can be placed under home confinement, unable to buy gas or an airplane ticket.

Kennedy Jr. stressed that the truckers in Canada were not charged with any crimes or convicted of any wrongdoing. They were simply targeted by the government for engaging in activities deemed unfavorable, leading to their lives being destroyed. He argued that granting such power to the government is dangerous and can be used to oppress individuals.

Kennedy Jr. is not alone in his concerns about CBDCs. Former President Donald Trump has also expressed reservations about the issuance of a central bank digital currency by the U.S. Federal Reserve. During a campaign stop in January, Trump vowed to prevent the creation of a CBDC, stating that it would give the federal government absolute control over people’s money, posing a threat to freedom.

Brexit leader Nigel Farage has also highlighted the dangers of government control over currencies. He warned that if CBDCs were implemented, individuals who were within the law could find themselves outside the law and have their bank accounts frozen, leading to a loss of control over their finances.

Several key international figures have admitted that CBDCs would allow for greater control over people’s finances. Agustin Carstens, general manager of the Bank for International Settlements, emphasized that the central bank would have absolute control over the rules and regulations governing the use of CBDCs. This level of control raises concerns about potential surveillance and the restriction of individual financial freedom.

In addition, a paper from the Bank of Canada research highlighted that CBDCs could negatively impact bank deposits. The introduction of a CBDC could crowd out bank deposits in the market for digital money, raising concerns about financial stability and profitability within the banking sector.

In response to these concerns, Republican senators led by Senator Ted Cruz have introduced a proposal seeking to ban CBDCs in the United States. Cruz argues that the Biden administration is eager to infringe on citizens’ freedom and privacy by surveilling their personal spending habits. He believes that Congress must clarify that the Federal Reserve has no authority to implement a CBDC.

The dire warning issued by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. regarding CBDC adoption highlights the potential threats to individual freedoms posed by these digital currencies. Kennedy Jr. urges caution, emphasizing that transactional freedom is as important as freedom of speech. With prominent figures like Kennedy Jr., Trump, Farage, and Cruz raising concerns, it is clear that CBDCs warrant further scrutiny before their widespread adoption. The potential for an authoritarian government and the loss of financial control are significant issues that must be addressed to ensure the preservation of individual liberties and democratic values.
