The Controversial See-Through Dress Worn by Kate Moss Receives Criticism as Reproduction is Put Up for Auction: Negative Reactions Emerge

Kate Moss, the iconic supermodel known for her daring fashion choices, is once again making headlines with her controversial see-through dress. A nearly identical replica of the dress she famously wore to a 1993 party is set to be auctioned off, causing a stir among fashion enthusiasts and critics alike.

The replica lamé slipdress, made by Liza Bruce who originally designed Moss’ dress, will be part of the Vintage Fashion auction “Antique Costume & Textiles” held by Kerry Taylor Auctions on April 16. With an estimated selling price of $250 to $380, this piece is sure to attract the attention of fearless fashionistas looking to own a piece of Moss’ iconic style.

The original dress, pulled from Bruce’s spring 1994 collection, gained notoriety when Moss wore it to the “Look Of The Year” bash hosted by Elite Model Management in London. Paired with a black thong, matching flip-flops, a fresh face, a messy updo, and a lit cigarette, Moss created a look that would go down in fashion history.

However, not all reactions to the dress have been positive. Moss’ spaghetti strap dress has been accused of perpetuating the toxic diet culture of the ’90s. Some critics argue that the dress only looked sexy because Moss was severely underweight at the time. On social media, one person expressed their disdain, saying, “You mean the dress that launched a million eating disorders? I’d like to purchase this dress just so I can give it a ceremonial burning.”

Moss herself has claimed that she was unaware of just how revealing the dress was when she wore it. In an interview with British Vogue last year, she admitted, “I did not know that this dress was see-through until the pictures came out the next day in the newspaper.” Moss attributes the illusion of nudity to the flash photography, stating that the fabric didn’t appear as sheer when she was wearing it. Despite the controversy surrounding the dress, Moss looks back fondly on the moment, saying, “Had I known we would be talking about it 30 years later … Good dress, good night.”

The auction will also feature other notable pieces from Moss’ fashion history, including the actual T-shirt she wore on the cover of i-D Magazine in June 2004. In addition, a mix of vintage items from esteemed designers such as Chanel, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Vivienne Westwood, and Gianni Versace will also be up for bidding.

As the auction approaches, it remains to be seen who will be the lucky bidder to acquire Moss’ memorable see-through dress. While some criticize its influence on body image issues, others see it as a significant piece of fashion history. Whether you view it as a symbol of empowerment or controversy, there’s no denying the impact that this dress has had on the fashion world.
