The Citizen Sleuth Uncovering New Clues in the Son of Sam Case

The recent breakthrough in the Son of Sam case has led to new revelations about the infamous serial killer, David Berkowitz. Thanks to the dogged detective work of Manny Grossman, a citizen sleuth, it has been discovered that Berkowitz had one more victim than previously known and that his killing spree began earlier than believed. Grossman, who has been obsessed with the case for decades, identified a pattern in Berkowitz’s behavior and writings that led him to believe there may be additional bodies connected to the killer around two key dates: December 14, 1976, and February 25, 1977.

Grossman’s theory is based on the fact that Berkowitz authored and dated two twisted letters on those dates, which were found by police in his Yonkers apartment after his arrest in August 1977. These letters, part of what Grossman calls the “apartment writings,” reveal Berkowitz’s obsession with dogs barking and his belief that a demon lived in his neighbor’s black Labrador retriever, Sam Carr. According to Grossman, there is an “established pattern” of Berkowitz writing these letters, dating them, and then going out to commit murders.

One letter written by Berkowitz and dated December 14, 1976, suggests that he was planning another attack. In a chilling statement, Berkowitz wrote, “Today’s the day I will go and spill blood for Sam Carr.” Another letter dated March 8, 1977, rages about the demon not stopping and asks, “How much blood does he want me to spill for him?” This letter was followed by the murder of college student Virginia Voskerichian later that night.

Grossman presented these letters to Bronx homicide detectives on May 28 and shared his theory about additional victims. While the NYPD has not responded to questions about this theory, Grossman believes they were interested in his findings. However, he does not expect to be involved in their investigation and is satisfied with the way they handled the case of Wendy Savino, whom they concluded was Berkowitz’s first official victim.

Grossman’s interest in the case began during the COVID-19 pandemic when he had extra time on his hands. He dove into online files related to the Son of Sam case, which he found on thepeoplevsdavidberkowitz.com. Through this website, Grossman gained access to a wealth of information obtained through the Freedom of Information Act and public records.

While Grossman’s findings have shed new light on the Son of Sam case, he believes that such a killing spree could never happen in today’s high-tech world. With cameras everywhere, Berkowitz would have a much harder time evading capture and committing multiple murders. Grossman is content with his 15 minutes of fame and is happy with the way the NYPD handled the case. As for Berkowitz, he remains behind bars, having been denied parole for the 12th time last month.
