Tesla Supercharging Stations Now Open to All EVs in California

In a groundbreaking move, Tesla has announced that its Supercharging Stations in California are now accessible for use by electric vehicles (EVs) of different makes. This decision opens up 10,000 new charging locations, significantly expanding the options for EV owners in the state. The move comes as California continues to lead the nation in electric vehicle sales, with around 37 percent of total EVs sold in the US being registered in the Golden State by 2022.

Governor Gavin Newsom shared the exciting news in a video posted on social media platforms on April 27. Demonstrating the inclusivity of Tesla’s charging network, Governor Newsom arrived at a Supercharger station behind the wheel of an electric Ford Mustang. “So I just pulled up to a Tesla charging station, but not in a Tesla, because today we’re announcing Tesla’s opening up its charging network to additional models of electric vehicles,” stated Newsom. He emphasized that this move is part of California’s commitment to maintaining its leadership and dominance in the electric vehicle industry, as the state transitions from traditional combustion engines to low-carbon green growth.

While Ford and Rivian vehicles can currently charge using the Supercharger network, other major automakers such as General Motors, Volvo, and Polestar EVs are expected to gain access this spring. Tesla had previously announced that adapters would be made available by vehicle manufacturers, and EV makes other than Tesla were scheduled to equip their new cars with updated charging ports compatible with Tesla chargers by the end of 2024. This initiative aims to encourage more drivers to rapidly transition to an emission-free future.

California already boasts an impressive 105,000 publicly available charging stations for EV owners. Among these, Los Angeles leads the pack with 2,286 stations, followed by Orange County with 929 and San Diego with 753. These numbers are set to increase further with the addition of the Tesla Supercharging Stations, providing EV owners with even more convenience and accessibility across the state.

Tesla’s Supercharger network extends beyond California, with over 45,000 charging stalls worldwide. These units deliver rapid charging at the same cost Tesla owners pay and bill vehicle owners via the Tesla app. Depending on the model, the Superchargers can provide up to approximately 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes, offering a quick and efficient charging experience for EV owners.

While the expansion of charging infrastructure is undoubtedly positive news for EV adoption, it’s important to note that charging at a Supercharger station from 0 to 100 percent can cost around $25. This cost estimate, according to Solar Reviews, a national industry website, highlights the financial considerations that come with utilizing these fast-charging stations. However, the convenience and speed they offer may outweigh the price for many EV owners looking for a seamless charging experience.
