Maryland Man Arrested for Fatally Shooting Roommate During Remote Control Argument

A Maryland man has been taken into custody after allegedly shooting and killing his roommate during a heated dispute over a remote control. Richard Bennaugh, a 38-year-old resident of Springdale, has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of 27-year-old Domonique Scott Hayes.

Police Respond to the Scene

Prince George’s County Police responded to the incident at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. Upon arrival, officers discovered Scott Hayes inside the residence with gunshot wounds. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary Investigation and Arrest

Authorities have determined that Bennaugh shot Scott Hayes during their argument. According to documents obtained by FOX 5 DC, Bennaugh contacted the police approximately six hours after the shooting occurred, claiming that his roommate had threatened him with knives.

The Account of Events

Bennaugh provided his account of the events to the police. He stated that he had fallen asleep on the sofa and was awakened by Scott Hayes causing a disturbance in the kitchen. Scott Hayes repeatedly asked Bennaugh about the whereabouts of the remote control, but Bennaugh ignored him.

At one point, Bennaugh removed a blanket from his head and allegedly saw Scott Hayes holding two knives. In response, Bennaugh grabbed his handgun and began shooting before retreating to his room on the third floor.

Afterwards, Bennaugh claims that he did not realize Scott Hayes had been injured and assumed that none of his shots had hit him. He then went back to sleep.

Contacting the Authorities

Prince George’s County Police are urging anyone with information about the case to contact their homicide unit at 301-516-2512.
