Surge in Central Park Robberies: NYPD Seeks Trio of Teen Muggers

Robberies in Central Park have been on the rise, with the NYPD currently searching for a trio of teen muggers responsible for a recent attack. The incident occurred on August 11th when the three suspects approached a 27-year-old woman near 67 West Drive in the park. They forcefully grabbed her arm and demanded her belongings. The suspects managed to steal her phone and purse, later using her credit card to make charges. The NYPD has released video and photos of the suspects, who are believed to be between the ages of 15 and 17.

One of the suspects is described as a man with a slim build, wearing a white tank top, gray sweatpants, and red and white sneakers. He was also seen carrying a black cross-body bag. The second suspect is also described as a man with a slim build, seen wearing a multi-colored hat, white t-shirt, black shorts, and white sneakers. He was also carrying a black cross-body bag. The third suspect, who also has a slim build, was seen wearing a black baseball hat, black t-shirt, and white shorts.

While the recent robbery does not appear to be part of a pattern, Central Park has experienced a significant increase in robberies this year. According to NYPD data, robberies within the park have more than doubled compared to the same period in 2023. So far, there have been 34 reported robberies, compared to 13 in the same timeframe last year. This surge in robberies has raised concerns about safety within the iconic park.

In a separate incident, an 11-year-old boy who was arrested for a subway robbery in Queens was linked to a series of heists in Central Park. NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell revealed that this young boy was part of a group of migrant kids responsible for approximately 10 robberies in the park. It is believed that up to 12 boys or young men have been involved in these crimes.

The increase in robberies within Central Park is alarming and highlights the need for heightened security measures. As a popular tourist destination and recreational space, the safety of park-goers should be a priority. The NYPD has been working to address this issue by increasing patrols and investigating these incidents. It is crucial for visitors to be vigilant and take precautions while enjoying the park to avoid becoming victims of crime.
