Stocks Drift to Mixed Close on Wall Street, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Reach New Highs

Wall Street closed with a mixed performance on Tuesday, as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq composite reached new record highs. Despite more stocks falling than rising within the S&P 500, the index managed to add 0.3 percent, driven by gains in the technology sector. The Nasdaq climbed 0.9 percent, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.3 percent.

The Federal Reserve’s announcement on interest rates, expected on Wednesday, is anticipated to result in no change. However, one company that made a significant impact on Tuesday’s market was Apple, whose stock surged by 7.3 percent. This boost was largely attributed to their focus on artificial intelligence.

The S&P 500 closed at 5,375.32, up 14.53 points or 0.3 percent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 120.62 points or 0.3 percent to 38,747.42. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq composite rose by 151.02 points or 0.9 percent to 17,343.55. Smaller companies, represented by the Russell 2000 index, experienced a decline of 0.4 percent, with a decrease of 7.27 points to reach 2,024.35.

Looking at the weekly performance, the S&P 500 has gained 28.33 points or 0.5 percent so far. In contrast, the Dow has seen a slight decline of 51.57 points or 0.1 percent. However, the Nasdaq has continued to rise with an increase of 210.42 points or 1.2 percent. Similarly, the Russell 2000 has had a minor setback, losing 2.21 points or 0.1 percent.

In terms of year-to-date performance, the S&P 500 has shown significant growth of 605.49 points or 12.7 percent. The Dow has also made progress, gaining 1,057.88 points or 2.8 percent. The Nasdaq has outperformed both indices, surging by 2,332.19 points or 15.5 percent. On the other hand, the Russell 2000 has experienced a slight decline of 2.73 points or 0.1 percent.
