Starbucks Sales Weakened by U.S. Boycott and ‘Cautious’ China

# Starbucks Reports Quarterly Earnings and Revenue Below Expectations

Starbucks, the popular coffee chain, announced its quarterly earnings and revenue on Tuesday, which fell short of Wall Street’s expectations. Both domestic and international sales failed to meet estimates, leading to a decrease in the company’s full-year revenue outlook. CEO Laxman Narasimhan attributed these challenges to “headwinds,” including a boycott in the U.S. and increased competition in China.

## Disappointing Results Impact Stock Performance

Initially, shares of Starbucks fell in extended trading following the announcement. However, they later recovered and rose by approximately 3%.

## Q1 Financial Results Compared to Expectations

Here is a breakdown of Starbucks’ fiscal first-quarter results compared to analysts’ expectations:

– Earnings per share: 90 cents (adjusted) vs. 93 cents expected.
– Revenue: $9.43 billion vs. $9.59 billion expected.

During the first quarter, Starbucks reported a net income of $1.02 billion, or 90 cents per share, compared to $855.2 million, or 74 cents per share, in the previous year. Excluding restructuring costs and other items, the company earned 90 cents per share. Net sales increased by 8% to $9.43 billion, while global same-store sales grew by 5%, falling short of estimates.

## Challenges in the U.S. Market

Although same-store sales in North America rose by 5%, Starbucks faced a decline in U.S. traffic starting in mid-November. CEO Laxman Narasimhan attributed this decline to “misperceptions” about the company’s stance on the Israel-Hamas war. The controversy began when Starbucks Workers United, representing unionized cafes, posted in support of Palestinians, leading to backlash. Starbucks distanced itself from the tweet and sued Workers United for trademark infringement. Narasimhan wrote a letter to workers condemning misinformation and seeking to resolve the controversy.

To regain customers, Starbucks is targeting them with promotions through its loyalty program and introducing new Valentine’s Day drinks.

## Holiday Season Performance and International Sales

Starbucks’ fiscal first quarter includes the crucial holiday season, during which the company typically sees significant gift card sales and higher traffic. This year, consumers loaded a record-breaking $3.6 billion onto gift cards. However, international same-store sales growth fell short of expectations, with only 7% growth instead of the anticipated 13.2%. Sales in the Middle East were also affected by the war. In China, Starbucks’ second-largest market, same-store sales grew by 10%, but the average ticket fell by 9% due to cautious consumer behavior and increased competition from lower-priced rivals like Luckin Coffee.

## Revised Outlook for Full-Year Sales

Starbucks executives believe that the challenges faced in this quarter are temporary but significant enough to revise the company’s full-year sales outlook. The revised forecast includes a lower revenue growth range of 7% to 10% for fiscal 2024, down from the previous forecast of 10% to 12%. The global same-store sales outlook was also adjusted to a range of 4% to 6%, compared to the previous range of 5% to 7%. However, Starbucks maintained its full-year forecast of earnings per share growth of 15% to 20%.

In conclusion, Starbucks’ quarterly earnings and revenue fell below expectations due to various challenges in both domestic and international markets. The company remains optimistic about its long-term prospects but has adjusted its sales outlook accordingly.
