Spirit Airlines Fires Gate Agent for Putting 6-Year-Old on Wrong Flight
Spirit Airlines has terminated a gate agent in Philadelphia after an unaccompanied 6-year-old boy was mistakenly put on the wrong plane, which took him to Orlando instead of his intended destination in Fort Myers, Florida. The airline blamed the gate agent for the mix-up and stated that they have policies in place to prevent such incidents. An internal investigation was launched, and the agent responsible is no longer employed by Spirit. The company emphasized that anyone involved in the incorrect boarding will be held accountable for not following procedures.
Maria Ramos, the boy’s grandmother, expressed her satisfaction with the airline’s response but still seeks more details about the incident. She wants to see video footage and is working with Spirit Airlines to obtain further answers. Ramos had previously criticized the airline for taking six days to reach out to her family after the incident occurred.
Shelly-Ann Cawley, a former flight attendant and CEO of Travelers Care, explained the process for unaccompanied minors. Parents or guardians check in at the ticket counter, go through security, receive a boarding pass, and accompany their child to the gate. However, flight attendants are not responsible for constant supervision of solo-flying children. Their primary duty is to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers on board.
Spirit Airlines has offered to reimburse Ramos for her four-hour drive to pick up her grandson and has also agreed to cover his return flight to Philadelphia, along with a round trip for Ramos to accompany him. The airline allows unaccompanied minors between the ages of 5 and 14 to travel domestically on direct flights within the United States.
