Soar Above Norway’s Fjords on the Thrilling Stigull Floating Staircase

Getting High: Norway’s Latest Adrenaline Rush

Norway’s natural beauty is renowned worldwide, and now there’s a new way to appreciate it for the daring. The “Stigull” ladder, a 131-foot-long climb suspended 2,591 feet above a Norwegian fjord, is the latest thrill for adrenaline junkies in the town of Loen. Per Helge Bø, operations manager of Løen Active, describes it as something that might make most people’s legs tremble a bit. From afar, it looks like people are floating in the air, adding to the excitement.

Loen, situated in the Nordfjord region known for its dramatic landscapes, has been expanding its via ferrata climbing route. Via ferrata, meaning “iron path” in Italian, involves using cables, ladders, and other guideways to assist mountain climbers. The Stigull ladder, mounted at a 45-degree angle, is a thrilling part of this course. To even reach it, adventurers must first make their way up Loen’s Mount Hoven, an adventure in itself.

However, if you can brave the heights, the views are more than worth it. According to Helge Bø, if you dare to look around, you can take in the spectacular fjord landscape with glittering waters and majestic peaks. The massive cliff face and narrow gorge add to the awe-inspiring experience. For those who prefer a less adventurous route, Mount Hoven can be summited via one of the world’s steepest cable cars, with a restaurant waiting at the top.

While the Via Ferrata Loen experience comes at a price – hikers pay around $160 for a guide and equipment fee – the sense of accomplishment is immense. Helge Bø reassures climbers that all activities take place while securely attached to a wire. Climbing the ladder itself is not difficult, but the exposure and the satisfaction of conquering such a daring feat are what make it truly exhilarating.

So, if you’re up for a unique adventure, don’t worry if you’ve never done anything like this before. The Stigull ladder may look intimidating, but with proper safety measures in place, it’s an experience that will provide memories and stories to last a lifetime. Just remember to bring your courage and a sense of adventure!
