Senior Bowl: Giants’ Defensive Coordinator Search Continues with Focus on Key Traits

Giants’ Offseason: Scouting NFL Draft Prospects at the Senior Bowl

As the regular season came to an end, the Giants’ coaches and front office staff immediately shifted their focus to analyzing what went wrong and what needs to be improved upon. With a record of 6-11, it’s clear that changes are necessary to prevent a repeat of this disappointing season. This week, the Giants’ brass will be attending workouts and scouting NFL Draft prospects at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.

Getting Defensive

The Giants are in the process of selecting a new defensive coordinator, with Dennard Wilson emerging as a favorite. Wilson, who previously coached for the Ravens, Eagles, and Jets, has already interviewed twice with head coach Brian Daboll. The Rams and Titans are also interested in Wilson. Meanwhile, Wink Martindale, the Giants’ previous defensive coordinator, has yet to find a new team.

Check out the QBs

While top quarterbacks like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels won’t be at the Senior Bowl, there are still plenty of talented quarterbacks competing. The Giants, who hold the No. 6 overall pick, may consider selecting a quarterback to eventually replace Daniel Jones. Bo Nix from Oregon is one quarterback to watch at the Senior Bowl.

Getting an Edge

The Giants have a pressing need for an edge rusher, and Laiatu Latu from UCLA is one of the top prospects in this position. Although the Giants’ No. 6 pick may be too high for Latu, he is certainly worth keeping an eye on. Latu recorded 13 sacks and 21.5 tackles for loss in the previous season.

Protection Plan

The Giants’ offensive line was a major weakness in the 2023 season, allowing a franchise-record 85 sacks. While they have a solid left tackle in Andrew Thomas, they need to address the right tackle position. Evan Neal, the No. 7 overall pick in 2022, struggled in his second NFL season. Taliese Fuaga from Oregon State is the top-rated offensive tackle at the Senior Bowl.

Upward Mobility

This week also provides an opportunity for two members of Daboll’s staff to showcase their skills. Shea Tierney, the Giants’ quarterbacks coach, will serve as the offensive coordinator for the National team, while Mike Adams, the assistant special teams coach, will be the special teams coordinator for the American team. This “Coach Up” format allows assistant coaches to gain experience and potentially move up in their careers.
