Second Suspect Arrested in Shooting Death of Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy

A second suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death of Harris County Sheriff’s deputy, Deputy Fernando Esqueda. Dremone Francis has been charged with capital murder, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. This development comes after the arrest of Ronald “Ronnie” Palmer Jr. earlier in the week.

The tragic incident occurred on July 10 when officers responded to an aggravated assault call at a Little Caesars Pizza on Wallisville Road. Palmer had become upset with his order and proceeded to verbally assault and pistol-whip an employee before fleeing the scene. The employee provided a description of the suspect’s vehicle, including the license plate, which enabled deputies to track it to an address on Italian Cypress Road.

Deputy Esqueda, who was working overtime to patrol the streets after Hurricane Beryl, responded to the area and notified his team members over the phone upon spotting the suspect’s vehicle. Unfortunately, Esqueda was ambushed while speaking with his colleagues and was shot. The deputy was in his undercover vehicle at the time, which sustained multiple bullet holes. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead.

On Thursday evening, Palmer was apprehended in northeast Harris County by a fugitive task force at a residence belonging to an acquaintance of an acquaintance. Authorities revealed that Palmer had been on the move since the shooting and had been at the residence for approximately two hours before his arrest.

Palmer appeared in court on Friday, waiving his initial court appearance. During the reading of the charging documents, it was disclosed that there was another person present with Palmer on the night of the assault on the employee. The second suspect’s court appearance is yet to be scheduled.

The tragic loss of Deputy Esqueda highlights the dangers law enforcement officers face daily while protecting their communities. It serves as a somber reminder of the risks they undertake to ensure the safety of others. The swift apprehension of the suspects demonstrates the dedication and diligence of the law enforcement agencies involved in bringing them to justice.

As the case progresses, it is crucial to support and honor the memory of Deputy Esqueda, who had served with the department for five years. His sacrifice should remind us of the bravery and selflessness exhibited by law enforcement officers across the country. Let us hope that justice will be served for Deputy Esqueda and his loved ones as they navigate through this difficult time.
