Rick Pitino’s Commute Boosts St. John’s NCAA Tournament Chances

Rick Pitino’s Journey Back to St. John’s

From High School Sweethearts to Big East Revival

Joanne Pitino has been with Rick Pitino since their high school days, where they would spend time at the St. Dominic’s High School gym. Joanne recalls how their plans for a beach trip often turned into a visit to Carvel instead. However, when Rick decided to return to coaching at St. John’s, Joanne couldn’t believe it. After all the moves and stops, Rick had finally found a comfortable spot at Iona College, just a short commute from their home near Winged Foot in Mamaroneck.

An Unexpected Opportunity

When Rev. Brian Shanley, St. John’s president, approached Pitino about joining the Big East conference and leading the team through a rebuild, Joanne questioned his sanity. But now, months later, she is enjoying the ride just as much as Rick is. St. John’s is making waves in the NCAA, with a strong record and a dedicated fan base.

The Road to Success

St. John’s has established itself as a legitimate NCAA contender, with solid metrics and impressive wins. Pitino’s message to his players is simple: play every game like it’s a chance to make it to the NCAA Tournament. Pitino himself has been to the tournament multiple times with different schools, and he wants to help his players experience that same success.

A Hunger for Victory

Many of Pitino’s players are still chasing their first NCAA Tournament appearance. They are hungry to prove themselves and leave St. John’s as winners. Pitino is fueled by their determination and hopes to continue the team’s success on the road.

A Return to Roots

Pitino grew up idolizing St. John’s and the city game. Now, he is back in the Big East and preaching the importance of basketball in New York City. He is excited about the work that needs to be done at St. John’s and is optimistic about the team’s future.
