Mets Offensive Resurgence: A Closer Look at the Lineup’s Improvement

The Mets’ recent offensive surge has caught the attention of fans and analysts alike. Despite their obvious flaws, the team’s lineup has been producing at an impressive rate. Over their last 18 games since May 18, the Mets have averaged 4.9 runs, a significant improvement from their previous 44 games where they averaged just 4.2 runs. To put things into perspective, the MLB-leading Phillies are averaging 5.1 runs per game.

Two key events took place on May 18 that coincided with the offensive improvement. First, manager Carlos Mendoza made a strategic decision to flip-flop Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor in the batting order. This move has paid off for Lindor, who has seen a notable increase in his .OPS since taking over the leadoff spot. His batting average, which had plummeted to .190, has climbed to a more respectable .235. While Nimmo’s overall numbers have slightly declined since moving to the third spot in the order, he has shown signs of returning to form in recent games.

The second significant change on May 18 was the implementation of a new approach during the daily pregame hitters’ meeting, inspired by J.D. Martinez. Players were encouraged to take accountability for their at-bats and state their approach for the upcoming game. If a player deviated from their stated approach, they would be required to explain themselves afterward. This approach aimed to foster a more focused and disciplined mindset among the players.

The Mets’ lineup has also received a boost from unexpected contributors. Harrison Bader and Starling Marte, who were both question marks due to health concerns, have exceeded expectations with their offensive outputs. Additionally, the potential addition of Francisco Alvarez, who is nearing a return from injury, further strengthens the Mets’ lineup. With Pete Alonso and Mark Vientos also performing well, the team possesses a potentially formidable foursome from the right side of the plate.

However, not all players have shared in the recent offensive success. Jeff McNeil, who struggled through much of last season after winning the NL batting title in 2019, has been left out of the lineup for three consecutive games against left-handed starters. The Mets are looking for McNeil to produce more line drives and fewer fly balls. His status as a full-time player may be in question, as evidenced by Jose Iglesias’ recent inclusion in the lineup. McNeil will have to prove himself to earn consistent playing time.

While the Mets’ offense has shown improvement, there are still areas of concern. The team needs to address their late-inning defense and receive longer outings from their starting pitchers. The defense has been shaky at times, and the bullpen has struggled to protect leads. However, the recent offensive resurgence provides a glimmer of hope for the Mets as they navigate through a crucial month that will determine their direction at the trade deadline. With the lineup continuing to improve since May 18 and the potential return of Francisco Alvarez, there is reason for optimism in Queens.
