A recent survey reveals that Taylor Swift has had a significant impact on NFL spending, with 16% of US shoppers admitting that the pop star influenced their decision to spend money on football in the lead-up to Super Bowl LVII. This translates to approximately 53 million Americans who have made football-related purchases since Swift went public with her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

Types of Spending

The majority of consumers spent their money on jerseys, memorabilia, and streaming services to watch NFL games, according to a study conducted by online financial firm LendingTree. The study also found that Gen Zers, particularly those aged 11 to 26, were the most likely to be influenced by Swift when making football-related purchases.

Kelce’s Merchandise Sales Soar

Swift’s presence at Arrowhead Stadium in September caused a surge in merchandise sales for Kelce, with a reported increase of 400%. Experts estimate that the Swift-Kelce era could generate up to $10 million in off-the-field earnings for the tight end.

Swift’s Impact on Super Bowl Audience

As the Chiefs secured their fourth AFC Championship win in five years, Swift’s attendance at the Super Bowl could draw even more attention. LendingTree found that 12% of female respondents and 15% of male respondents credited Swift for influencing their NFL viewing hours and their decision to watch the Super Bowl. Additionally, 18% of respondents stated that they would be rooting for the Chiefs because of Swift, with higher percentages among millennials and Gen Zers.

LendingTree’s chief credit analyst, Matt Schulz, emphasized the significant economic impact of Swift’s influence. He stated, “She’s an absolute force to be reckoned with economically, and while her grip on the American public isn’t going to last forever, no one should bet on it fading much anytime soon.”
