Records reveal charge filed against 82-year-old doctor for housing alleged unlicensed surgeon at his clinic

In a shocking turn of events, an 82-year-old doctor in Houston, Texas, has been charged with a felony for housing an alleged unlicensed surgeon at his clinic. Dr. Rodolfo Garma Giraldi, who is a licensed doctor in the state according to the Texas Medical Board website, turned himself into the authorities on Tuesday. The charge against him states that he aided the practice of medicine without a license, resulting in physical and psychological harm to three women between March 2022 and October 2023.

This case came to light after Alexander Padilla, the unlicensed surgical assistant, was arrested by the Houston Police Department’s Major Offenders Division last October for practicing medicine without a license at Giraldi’s cosmetic surgery center. However, in a surprising turn of events, the charge against Padilla was dismissed in March. Instead, he was charged with practicing medicine without a license, causing physical harm, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Padilla is currently out on bond.

According to investigators, Padilla performed cosmetic surgeries on dozens of women at Giraldi’s Houston Aesthetic Center on the Katy Freeway, some of which resulted in complications. More than 30 women have come forward, reporting their experiences to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. The investigation revealed that Giraldi failed to monitor and supervise Padilla adequately, despite having a legal duty to do so as the center’s medical doctor.

This case has raised questions about the responsibility of clinic owners in ensuring the safety and well-being of their patients. “The doctor knows better,” said Lance Walters, a plaintiff’s attorney not involved in the cases. “In my opinion, the owner of the clinic is just as culpable as the one doing the cutting.” Giraldi’s defense attorney, Dennis Powell, declined to comment on the matter.

As a result of these charges, the Houston Aesthetic Center appears to be permanently closed as of Tuesday night. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of proper regulation and oversight in the medical field to protect patients from unlicensed practitioners and potential harm.

Dr. Giraldi’s next court date is scheduled for May 15, where further details of the case are expected to be revealed. The outcome of this trial will undoubtedly have implications not only for Dr. Giraldi but also for the broader medical community as it navigates issues of accountability and patient safety.

It is crucial for individuals seeking medical procedures to exercise caution and research the credentials and reputation of the professionals they entrust with their care. Instances like these highlight the significance of due diligence and awareness to ensure that individuals receive appropriate medical treatment from licensed and qualified practitioners.

As this story continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance in protecting patients’ rights and well-being within the medical field. The consequences of negligence or complacency can have severe repercussions for both patients and healthcare providers alike.
