Shoppers in the United States spent a whopping $7.2 billion online during the first day of Amazon’s Prime Day, according to a report by Adobe Analytics. As one of the most highly anticipated sales events of the year, Prime Day attracts customers with significant discounts and enticing deals. Major retailers like Walmart and Target have also jumped on the bandwagon, launching their own shopping events and offering deep discounts to compete with Amazon.

It’s no surprise that Amazon has been able to dominate the market during this time. Since its inception a decade ago, Prime Day has become synonymous with massive savings and fast delivery. Customers can take advantage of same- or one-day delivery options, making it even more convenient to shop for their desired items.

Interestingly, back-to-school spending has also seen a significant uptick. According to Adobe Analytics, it was up by a staggering 210 percent on Tuesday compared to daily sales levels in June 2024. This surge in spending indicates that customers are not only looking for deals on electronics and apparel but also stocking up on school supplies for the upcoming academic year.

In terms of overall online sales, Adobe reported a rise of 11.7 percent on July 16. In 2023, shoppers spent a total of $12.7 billion online across various retailers during the two-day Prime Day event. This demonstrates the immense popularity and influence of Prime Day in driving consumer spending.

As for Amazon itself, the average spend per order during the first 32 hours of Prime Day was $60.03, compared to $56.64 in 2023, according to data firm Numerator. This increase in average spend indicates that customers are willing to splurge more on discounted items during this sales event.

Looking ahead, Adobe predicts that shoppers will find major deals on Wednesday, with discounts of approximately 23 percent for electronics, 20 percent for apparel, and 15 percent for toys. These figures highlight the wide range of products that customers can expect to find at discounted prices.

Overall, Prime Day continues to be a significant event for both Amazon and other retailers. With its ability to draw in customers with attractive deals and fast delivery options, it’s no wonder that Amazon has been able to maintain its stronghold in the market. However, with other major retailers stepping up their game and offering competitive discounts, it will be interesting to see how the landscape evolves in the future.
