Recall Issued for More Than 440,000 Starbucks-Branded Mugs Due to Potential Burn and Laceration Hazards

In a recent announcement, officials have revealed that more than 440,000 metallic Starbucks-branded holiday mugs have been recalled by Nestlé USA due to potential burn and laceration hazards. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the recall notice on March 21, stating that the metallic-coated mugs were included in four of the company’s 2023 holiday gift sets.

The recalled gift sets contained ceramic mugs with a metallic coating bearing Starbucks branding. These mugs were available in 11 ounce and 16 ounce sizes. The four gift sets included in the recall are the Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs, Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug, Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug, and Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug.

The main concern with these mugs is that if they are microwaved or filled with extremely hot liquid, they can overheat or break, posing burn and laceration hazards. Nestlé USA Inc., which distributes the mugs, discovered the issues after consumers contacted the company. Immediate corrective action was taken once the problems were identified.

Although the recalled mugs were not sold in Starbucks stores, they were available for purchase online and in-store at Target and Walmart stores, as well as Nexcom military retail outlets nationwide, from November 2023 through January 2024. The various gift sets retailed at prices ranging from $10 to $20 each.

According to the CPSC notice, approximately 440,500 of these mugs, manufactured in China, are affected by the recall. So far, there have been 12 incidents reported of the mugs overheating or breaking, resulting in 10 injuries. Nine of these injuries involved severe burns or blisters on fingers or hands, while one incident resulted in a cut on a finger. One individual even required medical attention due to the severity of the burn.

Consumers who have purchased these recalled mugs are advised to immediately stop using them. They have the option to either return the mugs to the place of purchase or contact Nestlé USA to receive a full refund. Customers who return the recalled item in-store are eligible for a cash refund or a gift card refund, as stated in the CPSC notice. Alternatively, consumers can upload a photo of the mug on Nestlé USA’s official website to receive a full refund. No proof of purchase, such as a receipt, is required for those using the company’s website.

Nestlé USA has emphasized that this recall does not affect any other Nestlé USA or Starbucks-branded products. They are working closely with the CPSC to ensure the safety and integrity of their products. In a press release, Nestlé USA sincerely apologized for any inconvenience caused by this recall to both consumers and retail customers.

It is worth noting that Nestlé acquired the rights to distribute several Starbucks brands globally under the Global Coffee Alliance agreement in 2018. This alliance has been successful, with Starbucks generating $1.6 billion in incremental sales for Nestlé in 2022, according to a September 2023 press release.

The safety of consumers is of utmost importance, and companies must take swift action when potential hazards arise. Nestlé’s immediate response and cooperation with the CPSC demonstrate their commitment to ensuring the quality and safety of their products. As for consumers, it is crucial to heed the recall notice and discontinue the use of the affected mugs to avoid any potential injuries.
