Recall Issued for 2 Million Black & Decker Clothing Steamers Following Multiple Burn Injuries

In a shocking turn of events, Black & Decker has issued a recall for approximately 2 million of its popular clothing steamers due to reports of burn injuries caused by hot water spewing out of the devices. This recall comes as a significant expansion of a previous recall announced by Empower Brands, a subsidiary of Spectrum Brands Inc., and raises serious concerns about the safety of these steamers.

The initial recall, which took place in November 2022, involved around 520,000 Black & Decker Model HGS011 Easy Garment Steamers. At that time, a repair remedy was offered to address the issue. However, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has received continued reports of burn injuries involving the repaired units. As a result, Empower Brands has decided to recall an additional 1.6 million steamers, including those that were previously repaired, and is now offering full refunds to affected consumers.

The main concern with these steamers is their tendency to spray or leak hot water during use, posing a significant burn hazard. According to the CPSC, Empower Brands has received a staggering 317 reports of hot water expelling from the steamers, resulting in 82 burn injury reports. Seven of these injuries were classified as second-degree burns, indicating the severity of the issue. What is particularly alarming is that 94 of these incidents, including 19 burn injuries, involved units that had already been repaired or had an updated design.

The Black & Decker Model HGS011 Easy Garment Steamers were widely available in various colors at popular retailers such as Walmart, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Amazon. They were also sold through the Black & Decker website between June 2021 and February 2024. Consumers who own these steamers are urged to check the CPSC’s notice, which provides detailed information on how to identify the recalled products through their label, model number, and UPC code.

If you are in possession of one of these steamers, it is crucial to stop using it immediately to avoid any potential injuries. Empower Brands has advised affected consumers to contact them directly for a full refund. This recall highlights the importance of product safety and serves as a reminder for manufacturers to thoroughly test their products before releasing them into the market.

As consumers, it is essential for us to stay informed about product recalls and take appropriate action when necessary. Always ensure that you register your purchases with the manufacturer to receive prompt notifications in case of a recall. Additionally, prioritize your safety by carefully reading and following all product instructions and warnings.

In conclusion, the recall of 2 million Black & Decker clothing steamers due to burn injuries caused by hot water spewing out of the devices is a matter of utmost concern. Empower Brands’ decision to expand the recall to cover all units of the model, including those previously repaired, shows a commitment to rectifying the issue and ensuring customer safety. As consumers, let us remain vigilant and prioritize our well-being by promptly responding to product recalls and taking necessary precautions.
