Prosecutors assert that a police officer discharged firearm during the removal of protesters from Columbia building, reports Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News.

In a recent incident at Columbia University, a police officer discharged his firearm inside a hall while clearing protesters from a building. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident. The District Attorney’s office is conducting a review of the situation, but no further details have been provided. This incident comes as part of a larger wave of pro-Palestinian protests that have been occurring on college campuses across the United States.

The protesters at Columbia University had been occupying Hamilton Hall, an administration building, after previously setting up a tent encampment on campus. Despite facing threats of suspension, the protesters returned to the encampment and escalated their demonstration by occupying the hall. Over 100 protesters were taken into custody during the crackdown.

These demonstrations are not limited to Columbia University alone but have spread to campuses nationwide. One notable incident occurred at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where hundreds of protesters defied orders to leave and clashed with law enforcement. The UCLA Chancellor described the situation as “a focal point for serious violence” that caused disruptions on campus and canceled classes.

The protests across various campuses are demanding an end to the Israel-Hamas war and calling for universities to stop doing business with Israel or companies that support the conflict in Gaza. These demonstrations have gained significant attention, with images of the police actions being broadcasted internationally.

However, these protests have not been without controversy. Israel has labeled them as antisemitic, while critics argue that these accusations are used to silence opposition. Some protesters have been caught making antisemitic remarks or threats, but organizers maintain that it is a peaceful movement to defend Palestinian rights and protest the war.

President Joe Biden has defended the students’ right to peaceful protest but condemned the disorder that has occurred in recent days. California Republican leaders have criticized university administrations for failing to protect Jewish students and allowing protests to escalate into “lawlessness and violence.” They are calling for the firing of university leaders and proposing pay cuts for administrators.

Protest encampments at various universities have either been cleared by police, resulting in more arrests, or closed voluntarily. There have also been instances of violence during these protests, such as a college professor suffering multiple broken ribs and a broken hand during a pro-Palestine protest at Washington University in St. Louis.

Amidst these events, a professors group at Columbia University has condemned the school’s leadership for involving the police in removing protesters, calling it a “horrific police attack on our students.”

As tensions continue to rise and protests persist, it remains to be seen how universities and law enforcement will address these ongoing demonstrations and ensure the safety of students while respecting their right to protest.
