Shooting Incident at Pro-Israel Protest in Newton Leads to Arrest

A shooting incident at a pro-Israel protest in Newton, Massachusetts, has left the community shocked and concerned. The alleged perpetrator, Scott Hayes, 47, from Framingham, has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and violation of a constitutional right causing injury. The Middlesex District Attorney, Marian Ryan, announced that Hayes was expected to be arraigned in Newton District Court on Friday morning.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening at around 6:40 p.m. near the intersection of Washington Street and Harvard Street. According to Ryan, a group of pro-Israel protesters had gathered in the area when they encountered a man on the other side of the street. The situation quickly escalated as the man repeatedly stepped into the road, leading to a confrontation between the two groups.

As tensions mounted and words were exchanged, the man from the other side of the street darted across the road and tackled Hayes, who was part of the pro-Israel group. A scuffle ensued, during which Hayes allegedly shot the man. Ryan revealed that Hayes legally possessed the gun used in the incident.

The victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was immediately taken to a local hospital for treatment. As of approximately 10:15 p.m., there was no update on his condition. The shooting prompted a significant police response and has left members of the Newton community on edge.

Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller expressed her concern, stating, “This was a frightening incident on Washington Street.” With many questions still unanswered, Fuller, Ryan, and Newton Acting Police Chief George McMains emphasized that the investigation was in its early stages. They urged anyone with video footage of the incident to share it with investigators, as it could provide crucial information.

At this time, the identity of the person who was shot has not been disclosed. The authorities have yet to release any further details regarding the incident. As of around 9:30 a.m. on Friday, there was no update on the victim’s condition.

In the wake of this disturbing event, a GoFundMe campaign was started in support of Scott Hayes. Within a short period, it has already raised over $52,500, highlighting the impact of the incident on the community and the support Hayes has garnered.

As the investigation continues, Newton Mayor Fuller called upon community members to “remain calm” and let the Newton police carry out their work to gather all the facts surrounding the incident. The authorities are committed to ensuring a thorough investigation to determine the events leading up to the shooting and to bring justice to all parties involved.
