Princess Madeleine of Sweden and Family Return to Sweden After Six Years in the US

Princess Madeleine of Sweden and her family have decided to move back to their home country after living in the United States for six years. The royal, along with her husband Christopher O’Neill and their three children, Princess Leonore, Prince Nicolas, and Princess Adrienne, have been residing in Florida since 2018. Their planned relocation to Sweden last summer had to be postponed.

In an Instagram post celebrating Princess Madeleine’s 42nd birthday on June 10, the Royal House of Sweden announced their imminent move to Stockholm, the capital city. The post featured a formal portrait of the family, with Madeleine and her daughters color-coordinated in light blue outfits, and O’Neill and Nicolas wearing dark suits with blue patterned ties.

The decision to move back to Sweden comes after several years of living abroad. The family initially moved to the Sunshine State in 2018 after residing in London for a while. The move back to Sweden was originally scheduled for August of last year, but it was delayed due to time constraints.

According to Margareta Thorgren, the information manager at the Royal Court of Sweden, the postponement was not due to any immigration issues or house sale. Instead, the family simply needed more time to prepare for the move. Thorgren stated that Leonore, Nicolas, and Adrienne would begin elementary school and preschool in the United States in the fall, while they would spend the summer in Sweden.

Last June, Madeleine and her family returned to Sweden to celebrate the National Day holiday. The royal shared a photo on Instagram, depicting them dressed in traditional Swedish blue and yellow outfits adorned with sunflowers. They expressed their love for Sweden in the caption, wishing everyone a happy National Day.

In March 2023, the Swedish palace officially announced that Princess Madeleine and her family would be moving back to Stockholm in August. They made the decision to relocate permanently to Sweden, and their children would attend school there. The family would be taking up residence in an apartment at the Royal Stables in Stockholm.

Princess Madeleine is no stranger to living in America. In 2010, she moved to New York City and worked as a project manager for Queen Silvia’s World Childhood Foundation. After marrying Christopher O’Neill in 2013, they remained in New York for several years, and their first child was born in a US hospital in 2014. Before their move to Florida, they also had a summer home in the state.

Over the past year, Madeleine has shared photos of her family enjoying their time in Florida. They celebrated Halloween by dressing up in costumes and continued their annual tradition. They also attended a service at the Swedish Church in Ft. Lauderdale to mark First Advent. Madeleine documented her daughter Adrienne’s 6th birthday with a beach photo, and they explored the vibrant neighborhood of Wynwood in Miami.

In 2019, it was announced that the children of Madeleine and O’Neill, along with those of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, lost their official titles of His and Her Royal Highness and would not be working members of the royal family. However, they retained their titles of Prince and Princess on a personal level, although future spouses or children will not inherit them.

Princess Madeleine addressed the announcement on Instagram, expressing her support for her children’s greater opportunity to shape their own lives as private individuals in the future. She and her family are now looking forward to starting this new chapter back in Sweden.
