The WindRunner’s purpose is to transport massive wind turbine blades, which are impossible to transport via terrestrial means. These blades, used in onshore wind turbines, can measure between 150 to over 300 feet long and weigh up to 35 tons. Currently, transporting these gargantuan blades requires specialized marine vessels, limiting their use on land. The WindRunner aims to overcome this challenge by flying the blades directly to various wind farms, eliminating the need for offshore transportation.

Not only will the WindRunner revolutionize the transportation of wind turbine blades, but it also opens up possibilities for the development of even larger terrestrial turbines. With its potential carrying capacity of 80 tons, the WindRunner could pave the way for turbines capable of generating even more power. Mark Lundstrom, the MIT-trained rocket scientist who founded Radia, spent over seven years perfecting the design of the WindRunner with his engineering team. Lundstrom sees potential applications for the WindRunner beyond wind power, suggesting that it could also be used to transport massive military machinery.

The WindRunner could become a reality within the next four years, according to Radia.
