PepsiCo Exceeds Earnings Expectations, Though Quarterly Revenue Declines

revenue-declines.jpg" />PepsiCo, the multinational food and beverage giant, recently released its quarterly results, revealing mixed performance in the face of weakened demand in North America. While the company exceeded earnings expectations, it experienced a decline in quarterly revenue. As a result, PepsiCo’s shares fell over 2% in premarket trading.

In terms of earnings per share (EPS), PepsiCo reported $1.78 adjusted compared to the expected $1.72. However, its revenue fell short of Wall Street estimates, with $27.85 billion compared to the expected $28.4 billion. Despite the decline in revenue, PepsiCo’s net income for the fourth quarter saw significant growth, reaching $1.3 billion or 94 cents per share, up from $518 million or 37 cents per share in the previous year.

One of the factors contributing to the decline in revenue was the impact of currency exchange rates, which dragged down net sales by 1.5%. However, PepsiCo’s organic revenue, which excludes acquisitions and divestitures, saw a 4.5% increase in the quarter, driven by higher prices. Unfortunately, these raised prices adversely affected demand for the company’s food and drinks, resulting in a decrease in volume.

PepsiCo executives have attributed these challenges to high borrowing costs and lower personal savings, which have constrained consumer budgets, particularly in North America. Consumers are increasingly opting for smaller pack sizes due to convenience and lower price points. Furthermore, the voluntary recall of granola bars and cereals from PepsiCo’s North American Quaker Foods division has affected sales during the quarter, along with weaker growth in the overall category. Frito-Lay North America, which includes popular brands like Cheetos and Doritos, also experienced a 2% decline in volume. Additionally, PepsiCo’s North American beverage unit witnessed a 6% decline in volume.

Looking ahead to 2024, PepsiCo expects organic revenue growth of at least 4% and core constant currency earnings per share growth of at least 8%. This forecast represents a slight adjustment from the company’s previous guidance, which anticipated organic revenue growth on the high end of 4% to 6% and core constant currency earnings per share growth in the high single digits. PepsiCo executives acknowledge that consumers are likely to remain cautious with their budgets and selective with their purchases.

PepsiCo predicts a challenging first half of the year as product recalls impact its North American Quaker Oats business and international conflicts hinder sales in certain regions. However, executives anticipate stronger international organic revenue growth compared to North America for the full year.

Overall, while PepsiCo exceeded earnings expectations, the company faces challenges in terms of declining revenue and volume. The impact of currency exchange rates, higher prices, and consumer budget constraints have affected demand for PepsiCo’s products. As the company navigates these challenges, it remains focused on organic revenue growth and constant currency earnings per share growth, while also recognizing the need for adaptability in response to changing consumer behaviors and market conditions.
