Patriots Reach Agreement to Trade Quarterback Mac Jones to Jaguars for Late-Round Draft Pick, According to AP Source – Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News

The New England Patriots have reached an agreement to trade quarterback Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a late-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. Although the trade cannot be officially finalized until the new league year begins and Jones passes a physical, it is expected to go through.

This move brings Jones back to his hometown of Jacksonville, where he was born and raised. It also adds competition to the Jaguars’ quarterback position, as Jones will vie with 30-year-old C.J. Beathard for the backup spot behind starter Trevor Lawrence.

Jones, who was the 15th overall pick in the 2021 draft, had a disappointing season last year and was eventually replaced by Bailey Zappe. He finished the season with a 2-9 record in 11 starts, throwing for 2,120 yards with 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. In his three NFL seasons, Jones has thrown a total of 46 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.

Despite his struggles last season, Jones showed promise as a rookie in 2021, earning a Pro Bowl selection. However, his performance declined in his second year under former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia’s play-calling.

In terms of salary cap implications, Jones will count $4.96 million against the Jaguars’ salary cap in the final year of his rookie contract. On the other hand, Beathard is scheduled to count $2.4 million in the final year of his deal.

This trade signifies the Patriots’ decision to move on from Jones and potentially seek a different option at quarterback. Meanwhile, the Jaguars hope that Jones can regain his rookie form and provide valuable depth behind Lawrence.

As the new league year begins and this trade becomes official, football fans will be eagerly watching to see how Jones performs in his new environment and whether he can bounce back from his disappointing sophomore season. The Jaguars are betting on his potential and hoping that a change of scenery will help him reach new heights. Only time will tell if this trade proves to be a smart move for both teams involved.
