Passenger Shares Experience of United Flight Diverted Due to Wing Damage
A routine flight from San Francisco to Boston turned into a nerve-wracking experience for passengers as a United Airlines plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Denver due to wing damage. Although no injuries were reported, the incident has left passengers shaken and questioning the safety of the aircraft.
Kevin Clarke, an announcer on the World Pro Ski Tour, captured the events on video and shared his account of the incident. Clarke mentioned feeling uneasy after takeoff when he noticed the plane shaking. Moments later, an alarming vibration and noise filled the cabin, leaving passengers concerned about their safety. Fortunately, the disturbance ceased quickly, offering some relief.
Clarke recalled a pilot walking down the aisle and inspecting the damage from a window before returning to the cockpit. Minutes later, an announcement was made over the PA system, revealing that the plane had sustained damage to the slat underneath the wing. The air traffic control audio confirmed that an emergency landing was imminent.
The Boeing 757 was rerouted to Denver, where it landed safely. Aviation expert Steve Ganyard explained that if the damage had occurred in the front section of the aircraft, it could have had a significant impact on its controllability. Fortunately, in this case, the damage was located towards the rear and did not affect the plane’s handling.
After the emergency landing, all 165 passengers were transferred to another flight to Boston. Kevin Clarke and his wife have since returned home, but the incident has left a lasting impression. Clarke admitted that he experienced intense turbulence before being informed about the wing damage, which heightened his anxiety. He couldn’t help but keep a close eye on the wing throughout the rest of the journey.
As for the cause of the wing damage, Ganyard speculated that it could be attributed to fatigue or improper maintenance. The aircraft’s age and usage may have played a role in the incident. However, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not yet provided an official cause and has stated that it is currently under investigation.
