Tragic Death of Twin Baby Girls in Houston Leads to Arrests and Charges

In a heart-wrenching incident that shook the community of Houston, Texas, twin baby girls lost their lives in October 2023. Now, their parents, Angelina Belinda Calderon and Fernando Vega, both 21 years old, are facing charges related to their deaths. The couple has been charged with two counts each of injury to a child-serious bodily injury, according to official court documents.

The unfortunate incident unfolded on October 4, 2023, when the Houston Police Department received a distress call from a residence on Linden Creek Lane. Responding officers found the twin infants, identified as Massail and Mirena Vega, unresponsive in their crib. Despite desperate attempts to resuscitate them, the premature babies could not be saved.

Fernando Vega, the children’s father, discovered them in their crib and immediately contacted emergency services for help. While on the phone with dispatch, Vega was instructed on how to perform CPR, but tragically, his efforts were in vain. In an interview with the police, Vega revealed that the twins had been “fussy” throughout the night. He had placed them in a bassinet where they fell asleep. Angelina Belinda Calderon, the children’s mother, stated that she saw the babies the next day but did not disturb their sleep as she was on her way to work.

The discovery of discolored skin, multiple bruises, contusions, and fractures on the infants raised suspicions among investigators. An autopsy later confirmed that the children had died from multiple injuries caused by a blunt object. Shockingly, it was also revealed that the twins had not received any medical check-ups since being discharged from the hospital. Calderon admitted that the infants had been sick but did not seek medical care for them.

The investigation took a grim turn when both Calderon and Vega emerged as suspects. On Friday, April 19, 2024, they were arrested without incident. While Calderon’s sister defended her as “one of the best mothers,” other family members alleged that Vega had a history of abuse towards Calderon. In fact, court documents revealed that he had been recently arrested for unlawfully restraining her.

Although Calderon’s aunt does not believe she physically harmed the children, she acknowledges that she should be held accountable for the neglect and other disturbing findings from the investigation. The authorities discovered that the twins were malnourished, and some of their injuries dated back several days or even weeks.

The tragic deaths of Massail and Mirena Vega have sent shockwaves through the Houston community. As the legal proceedings unfold, questions linger about the level of care provided to these vulnerable infants and the role of both parents in their tragic demise. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of seeking medical attention for infants and the responsibility that parents bear in ensuring their children’s safety and well-being.

For now, Houston mourns the loss of two innocent lives and hopes that justice will be served for Massail and Mirena Vega. The community stands united in demanding a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible for this heartbreaking tragedy.
