However, with Reddick’s holdout, McDonald has the opportunity to prove himself and earn more playing time.
Another player in the mix is Michael Clemons, a fourth-round draft pick in 2022. Clemons has a chance to secure the starting spot on the right side of the defensive line. Ulbrich praised Clemons, describing him as a player who excels on first and second downs and is making a case for a role on third downs as well. The Jets could potentially utilize both McDonald and Clemons as a two-pronged combination if Reddick’s absence continues.
Ulbrich is particularly impressed with Clemons’ progress, noting that the Jets tried to increase his weight last year but have since returned him to his previous playing weight. Ulbrich believes Clemons has the size, strength, and power needed to succeed and is excited to see his development.
As the Jets prepare for their upcoming preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, Ulbrich emphasizes the importance of improvement, especially in tackling. He acknowledges that tackling can be a challenge in the first game of the season and expects to see incremental improvements from his defense.
