Ongoing Rescue Operation in Baltimore following Bridge Collapse: Individuals and Vehicles Fall into Water

Tragedy Strikes Baltimore as Bridge Collapses After Ship Collision

In a devastating turn of events, a container ship collided with Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, resulting in a catastrophic collapse. Vehicles and individuals were plunged into the water, prompting an ongoing search and rescue operation. Maryland Secretary of Transportation, Paul Wiedefeld, described the situation as an “active search and rescue mission,” with workers present on the bridge at the time of the collapse.

The bridge, a vital artery that forms part of Interstate 695 and crosses the Patapsco River in Baltimore’s harbor, suffered significant damage due to the ship strike. The 948-foot container ship Dali, owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd, struck one of the bridge supports, causing the roadway to break apart and vehicles to plummet into the water below. Fortunately, all crew members, including two pilots, have been accounted for and reported no injuries.

The aftermath of the incident was captured on video, showing remnants of the steel frame protruding from the water and cargo dangling from the collapsed bridge. Emergency responders swiftly initiated search and rescue efforts, focusing on at least seven people believed to be in the water. The Baltimore City Fire Department deployed divers to aid in the operation.

Coast Guard units, including response boats and a helicopter crew, were dispatched to assist with the search and rescue mission. The U.S. Coast Guard issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and established a safety zone in the surrounding waters, urging mariners to avoid the area.

The cause of the collision is yet to be determined, with investigations underway. An unclassified report from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency revealed that the container ship Dali had experienced propulsion issues while leaving port. Maryland officials were warned of a possible collision, but tragically, the vessel struck the bridge, resulting in its collapse.

The impact of this incident extends beyond transportation disruptions. Maryland Governor Wes Moore declared a state of emergency, mobilizing federal resources to aid in the recovery efforts. The White House expressed its concern, closely monitoring the situation and offering support to local authorities. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has been in contact with Maryland’s governor and Baltimore’s mayor to provide assistance from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

As the rescue operation continues, drivers are advised to avoid the I-695 southeast corridor and utilize alternative routes such as I-95 and I-895. Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore has been suspended until further notice, while truck transactions are still permitted.

This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining infrastructure safety and implementing effective measures to prevent such disasters. The incident will undoubtedly prompt a thorough investigation to determine the causes and potential areas for improvement. As details emerge, it is crucial to support the affected individuals and their families during this challenging time.
