As a result, drug activity has increased significantly, with straphangers reporting that the station has become a “crack den.” The number of narcotics arrests in Transit District 3, which covers the 181st Street station, has risen by 136% compared to the same period in 2023. However, overall crime in the transit district has decreased.
Passengers are pleading for an increased police presence on the subway platform to deter illicit drug activities. They believe that consistent law enforcement is crucial for maintaining safety and ensuring a clean environment. Stephanie Jacobo, a second-grade teacher, emphasized the need for a consistent effort from the city to clean up the subway system.
In response to these concerns, the NYPD has acknowledged the complaints about the 181st Street Station and assured the public that officers have conducted over 700 directed patrols in the area. The MTA has also responded to the situation, stating that subway platforms are swept daily, and the tracks are cleaned every 30 days. However, there are limitations to increasing the frequency of track cleaning due to potential disruptions in service.
